Fleur Harris joins the David Jones Spring Flower Show
Every year, the Spring Flower Show at David Jones captures the essence of beauty and creativity by combining two of my greatest loves—flowers and fashion. Being invited to create a special installation representing the Fleur Harris baby and childrenswear brand, I couldn't have been more thrilled.
The idea blossomed into a wonderland filled with giant butterflies soaring above an expansive floral garden. Since this was my first interstate installation, I had to design something that could easily travel from Melbourne to Sydney. That’s when I teamed up with my friends at Pickawall, who helped bring my vision to life. They produced stunning printed cardboard structures for the butterflies and durable floor decals for the giant flowers.
While those were being made, I got hands-on with the details. I hand-sculpted the butterfly bodies and antennae using air clay, wire, PVA glue, and a sprinkle of biodegradable glitter. To add an extra touch of magic, I created oversized versions of my iconic Magic Key in shiny gold perspex, which I envisioned hanging amongst the butterflies.
With everything packed and ready, I made my way to Sydney. Over a whirlwind 24 hours, I assembled the butterflies, prepared them for installation, and worked through the night alongside Tilly from the Fleur Harris team. Together, we hung the butterflies and Magic Keys from the ceiling while arranging the giant flowers in a beautiful wreath on the floor beneath them.
To complete the display, we built elegant copper racks to showcase a curated selection from our new 'Fairyland' collection, dressing mannequins in some of my favourite outfits from the range. And as the finishing touch, we placed a large Fleur Harris logo at the heart of the installation.
The final set design
The result? A breathtaking display that brings a touch of magic and wonder to the store. As I hung the final butterfly, the store opened for trade, and I overheard a tiny voice exclaim, "Look, Daddy, butterflies!" Turning around, I saw a little girl, eyes wide with wonder, running toward the display. Moments like these, where my creativity brings joy and delight to others, are what make it all worthwhile.
The David Jones Spring Flower Show is located at David Jones, 98 Castlereagh St, Sydney NSW and runs from the 5th-17th September 2024. The Fleur Harris installation can be found on level 9 and will be on display until the 3rd November 2024.
With love,
Fleur and the Fleur Harris team xx
